R.I.P.LIMPY

It's been almost two years since the death of Limpy, wolf 253. This is the sad story of one of Yellowstone’s famous Druids. Unfortunately he was shot and killed, outside Daniel, Wyoming, on the day ESA protections for wolves were lifted the first time, in March 2008, by the then Bush Administration.

As a young male he was babysitter to Druid pups, guarding them and their den but he was bound to leave the Druids, traveling thousands of miles in his life, even though he was handicapped by a leg injury.

He was caught in a trap outside Salt Lake City, Utah, becoming the first wolf sighted in Utah in seventy years. Limpy was then returned to Yellowstone and reunited with his birth pack, the Druids. He would stay with them another two years until the death of alpha male 21. Many hoped Limpy would assume the alpha position but another wolf emerged, New Black and he ultimately became the alpha male.

Limpy left the Druids for the last time and struck out on his own, leaving the protection of Yellowstone, his wanderlust pushing him to search for a mate, maybe to start a new pack. Because of that, he died.
“He died for nothing” said Lake City resident Marlene Foard. A senseless death for a beloved wolf.
